Boscoe Holder was the quintessential performer, a self-taught painter, dancer and musician whose work was never confined to a single genre. Born in Port of Spain, in 1921, early encounters with the Trinidad Independents introduced him to contemporary developments in European art. Equally, his explorations into traditional Trinidadian dance and music forms fired his desire to empower and celebrate Black culture. A unique creative vision of Caribbean brilliance runs through Boscoe Holder’s work whether captured in his colour-drenched canvases or brought vividly to life in the settings, costumes and choreography of his dance spectacles.
With an insightful text by his son Christian Holder, Boscoe’s artistic output is presented from his early career in Trinidad, to the years in Europe in which he and his wife Sheila exploded onto the scene in a grey post-war London. Also addressed is Boscoe’s return home to a newly independent Trinidad where he was to become one of the Caribbean leading contemporary painters.
This volume combines for the first time a comprehensive survey of paintings and drawings from all periods of his career with a wealth of images from the Holder family archive which gives a broader understanding of Boscoe Holder’s life and times.
Caribbean Brushstrokes Art Gallery and David Roe cordially invite you to the book launch of Boscoe Holder “Travels in Rhythm - A Life of Art and Dance” written by the late Christian Holder to be held at Caribbean Brushstrokes Art Gallery. This event is in tribute to the legacies of Boscoe, Sheila and Christian Holder, whose contributions to culture through dance, art and music have made a lasting impact on the Caribbean and world.
