About Us

Welcome to Caribbean Brushstrokes, a dynamic space dedicated to celebrating the vibrant artistry of the Caribbean. Located in the heart of Barbados, our gallery showcases the diverse and rich cultural expressions of the region, featuring works from both renowned and emerging artists across the islands and diaspora.

Caribbean Brushstrokes is more than a gallery—it is a hub for creativity, connection, and education. Our mission is to foster a deeper appreciation for Caribbean art by creating an environment where artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts can engage in meaningful dialogue. Through exhibitions, artist talks, and workshops, we aim to inspire a greater understanding of the stories, heritage, and vision behind every piece.

Designed as a multipurpose space, the gallery also hosts book launches, intimate events, spoken word performances, and more, ensuring there’s always something happening to spark curiosity and engagement. Soon to include a wine bistro, the gallery provides a welcoming atmosphere for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of artistic expression.

We take pride in challenging traditional notions of art, embracing forms like tattoos, jewelry, textiles, and sculpture alongside traditional paintings and photography. Our goal is to push boundaries, celebrate creative output, and make art accessible to all while building a vibrant cultural scene in Barbados.

At Caribbean Brushstrokes, every visit is an invitation to discover the stories of the Caribbean through the eyes of its artists.

About Rae Skinner

A lifelong admirer of art, Rae Skinner has always viewed creativity as more than just visual expression—it is storytelling, history, and cultural identity. Her journey into the art world began with an early fascination with images, from magazine cutouts in her childhood bedroom to her first original art purchase, a pastel by Jamaican artist Maxine Bowes. However, it was during her university years that her passion truly deepened. A lecture by renowned art historian Vince Scully transformed her perspective on “seeing” art rather than just “looking” at it, while an exhibition of Diego Rivera’s murals at The Met introduced her to the power of art as a voice for the people.

With a career that allowed her to travel extensively across the Caribbean, Rae made a commitment to supporting and collecting Caribbean art. Over the years, she has built an impressive collection, featuring works from celebrated regional artists such as Amos Ferguson (Bahamas), Alberto Sautua Fernandez (Cuba), Barrington Watson (Jamaica), Albert Huie (Jamaica), Llewyn Xavier (St.Lucia), Earl Etienne (Dominica), Susan Mains (Grenada) as well as many talented artists from Barbados (Ras Akyem I, Ras Ishi, Omowale Stewart) and Trinidad & Tobago (Sundiata, Shawn Peters, Knolly Greenidge) among many others.

More than a collector, Rae sees her role as a champion for artists, providing them with a platform to share their work, stories, and creative processes. She believes in the importance of cross-cultural artistic dialogue and fostering an appreciation for Caribbean art as both an investment and a legacy.

With Caribbean Brushstrokes, Rae envisions more than a gallery—it is a multipurpose cultural space designed to ignite conversations, inspire collectors, and challenge conventional ideas of art. From exhibitions to artist talks, jazz nights, book launches, and spoken word performances, the space is a celebration of all forms of artistic expression, including paintings, photography, sculpture, textiles, jewelry, and even tattoo artistry.

Passionate about building a thriving creative community, Rae believes that art should be experienced, questioned, and appreciated. She hopes that Caribbean Brushstrokes will be a place where people can always discover something new, fostering a deeper connection to the vibrant and evolving artistic landscape of the Caribbean.
